The next pose in our insomnia series is the standed puppy pose. To come into this pose, you are going to start from heros pose (verodrasana). You are going to take you knees as wide as your mat, but keep your toes together. You are going to walk the hands forward, reaching the fingertips as far as they can go. Keep the energy moving out through the fingertips. Then, you are going to drop your head. However is most comfortable for you. If you'd like to turn your head to the side, and lay it down you can do that. You can alternate sides. Or the "proper way" to to it is to put your head on the floor. Keep reaching the fingertips out actively. That's what is going to create the stretch in the spine. You are trying to create a little bit of pull between your fingertips and your sitz bones. So, you are going to pull your sitz and tailbones back and reach the fingertips forward, creating some opposition to make a nice, long stretch. Try that, come into the pose and take a few good long breaths in and out through the nose. Anywhere between five and twenty breaths. However you feel most comfortable.
