What causes poor sleep? Dr Kirstie Anderson explains.

So what causes poor sleep ? Well a number of things can go wrong with sleep and make you feel rotten the next day. Sometimes there's something physical breaking up the sleep during the night. We always ask people whether they snore, if they snore heavily and whether anyone's watched them stop breathing during the night. There are other physical causes of sleep disruption, like restless uncomfortable legs, or pain, and sometimes medication that you take in the evening can break up the night's sleep. But lots and lots of people have insomnia without any of these other causes. They fallen out of the knack of just falling asleep easily. So they have difficulty going to sleep and difficulty staying asleep and they feel very unrefreshed the next morning. This is treatable and the best evidence-based treatment is something called cognitive behavioural therapy, CBT for insomnia.
