Not only is the brain an immensely complicated organ, but it would also appear to be completely individual to each person. Our brain waves are just that, ours! An amazing paper has been written about how creating individualised brain music could be used as a non-pharmacological way of treating insomnia. Here, we are talking about the transformation of our electrical impulses produced by our brain's activity into our very own personal music. I told you, it?s amazing isn?t it! The researchers explain how the polysomnogram of each individual is recorded and analysed. The different sleep patterns are identified and then converted into music. So, how was this study carried out, and what was the outcome. Well, 58 patients who were suffering with sleep disorders were chosen and divided into 2 groups. In fact the majority of the patients, all 44 of them, were in the main group leaving the other 14 patients in the placebo group. All the patients before going to sleep were given their own brain music to listen to, well, not quite all, as the placebo group were given someone else's compilation to listen to. This study was carried out over 15 days with questionnaires, psychological and electrophysiological tests were taken both before and after each musical treatment. Once the study finished the neuropsychological and neurophysiological results were examined. What the researchers found was that this "Brain Music" had positively affected more than 80% of patients in improving their sleep disorders, with there being absolutely no side effects or complications. Since this paper was written, the study into brain music and how it can help people under stress to tune them into a more relaxed state has become rather a popular subject for investigation. As Cervantes said; "He who sings, scares away his woes", I couldn?t have put it better myself.
