Mark's Case Study

Okay, so let's challenge you with this scenario and see what you think. Mark is a patient with a development disability who is very uneasy receiving medical care. He needs an MRI to be scheduled, and to reduce his anxiety, his mother is requesting that she be allowed in the room during the procedure. She would also like for all of Mark's medical caregivers to be female, as he seems to tolerate them better. She thinks it is best for Mark to be sedated before the procedure as well. Okay, let's pause right here. I know these requests are more than you would typically expect from a patient. So how would you respond to the mother's requests in order to best serve Mark's needs? Take a minute to pause this presentation and write down some solutions you came up with. You can press play when you're ready to come back. Okay, so you're back now. What did you think of? You probably thought of a number solutions including conferring with the physician to determine if sedation is in order and looking at scheduling options?for instance, are there days where the staff is primarily female? You may wish to discuss the implications of the mother being in the room during the procedure. Even if you cannot accommodate all of the patient's requests, the key is to let that person know that you heard them and that you will do what you can to help. You may not be able to address all their needs but letting people know that you are trying really goes a long way.
