Welcome to this edition of DoDEA News in a Minute, I'm Andrew Holloway. DoDEA schools recently participated in this year's Red Ribbon Week. Faculty engaged their students with activities aimed at educating and informing students of the dangers of drugs and alcohol. At Quantico Middle High School, located on Marine Corps Base Quantico in Quantico Virginia, teachers painted a grim and realistic picture of the dangerous effects of drugs and alcohol. During the lunch period, a teacher dressed as a Grim Reaper walked around removing students from their tables, signifying how fast everything can change. One minute they're here and the next, they're gone. As the Grim Reaper passes each table, the students that have been chosen will silently get up take their lunches and move to the S.A.D.D. table in the back. It's just a time for the whole student body to realize in an instant your life can change. It really does get people to think they're lucky not to make such decisions, to teach their kids in the future not to make these kinds of decisions. It taught me not to take drugs because if you took the wrong prescription it would probably be bad for you. Red Ribbon week takes place from October 23rd and October 31st every year. Since 1985 red ribbons have been worn to represent the destructive effects of drugs and alcohol as well as to honor those who continue to battle against illegal drugs.
