Am I Depressed? - Depression Help by DepressionHero

Hey, this is Omar from DepressionHero.com and I am in Balboa Park in San Diego, and I am standing in front of the Air and Space Museum. The reason I am standing here, and there are a lot of people around this actually. There is actually a gym here, and people are coming. There are all kinds of stuff going on; there is a graduation, people looking for parking. Let us keep moving here. The reason I am here in front of the Air and Space Museum is because I want to talk to you about depression. And you are saying what does Air and Space, and planes and jet engines have to do with depression? Well, again it is another analogy. And I want to tell you a bit of a story. It has to do with technology and it has to do with the evolution. Of course everybody is familiar with Wilbur and Orville Wright. They are these two ordinary people. I think they were bicyclist bicycle technicians or something, and they flew for 12 seconds. And that was the start of human flight, which prior to that moment people had thought was completely impossible. That was the consciousness. That was the belief system. Same thing with Mach one, people did not believe that they could break the sound barrier. They did. So all these different beliefs are what stop us from doing extraordinary things. And so I am here in front of these airplanes in this Air and Space Museum to talk to you about another story. And it has to do with John F. Kennedy, president of the United States at that time, and he was talking to Dr. Wernher Von Braun, who is really the main scientist behind the race to the moon and into space. It was a very simple question that JFK asked him. He said to him, What does it take? I am paraphrasing here. What does it take for us to send a man to the moon and back, safely? And the answer from Wernher Von Braun was, All it takes is willpower. Willpower. You have to consciously decide that you are going to do something, and then you will figure out how. Same thing with depression. I mean, going to the moon? That was a seemingly impossible task. Flying? Seemingly impossible task. Breaking the sound barrier? Again, seemingly impossible task. But all of these things were done. Same thing. You may think that you have no way to get out of your depression. You do not know how to get out of your depression. But, what I am saying to you is that it starts with an act of will, the desire. You need to have that desire and the will to do it, where you actually say I am absolutely going to beat my depression no matter what. And taking antidepressants, some kind of happy pill is not the answer. That just covers up the symptoms. It does not solve the problem. You cannot go to the moon, just by taking a pill for example. Same thing. You have got a seemingly impossible task and it starts within you. Everything starts within you. You have to decide that you are not satisfied with the way you are living right now, and make a decision to make a change. And become a creative contributor to the world, and become a hero. The only way we can become a hero is to overcome an obstacle, and in this case, it is depression. So what is the lesson of the depression? Get the lesson of depression. Discover it. You start with the desire. You start with the willpower to overcome it. You get to discovery. You discover what is the issue? What is the issue that is been causing you the depression? You may think it is a chemical imbalance, but as far as I know, if you have been given an antidepressant, the doctor did not stick some electrodes in your head and take some kind of chemical measurement, and tell you that there was an imbalance. Most doctors, most psychiatrists, most of these people, they are guessing. They are just following what the big pharmaceutical companies are telling them to do, which is, Oh you are depressed. Try this pill. By the way it will not work for 4 to 6 or 8 weeks, before you see any results. So for 4 to 6 to 8 weeks you are taking a pill that is giving you all these side effects and it is not doing anything. You have got to start with the willpower and the desire, and then do something different. Okay? So that is what it takes to become a hero. And you can become a hero of your life just by overcoming your depression, getting the lesson, and then you can become a creative contributor to the world and make a change.
